HIS STORY
The Public Baths were built on the site of the 3-star Hôtel de France shortly after the apparitions in 1858. The city architect then had a hotel with a few rooms built there, which was replaced between the two wars by the current Art Deco-style building.
HIS NAME
The hotel is named DE FRANCE because in 778, Charlemagne, King of the French and Roman Emperor, had seized the city except for the castle which would never consent to submit to any mortal. The bishop, as a good servant and ambassador of the said Lady Sainte-Marie, came to find Mirat, and among other words addressed this to her: "Mirat, since you do not want to surrender to Charles the Great, the most illustrious mortal in the universe, since you do not want to recognize a master, at least recognize a mistress, surrender to the noblest lady who ever was, the Mother of God, Saint Mary of Puy, Our Lady of France. I am her servant, become her knight." At these words, Mirat, already illuminated from above by a ray of grace, said to him: "I surrender my arms and I deliver myself with all that belongs to me to the Mother of the Lord, to Saint Mary of Puy." Following the custom of gentlemen, he gave his name to the fortified castle of Lourdes, which has since been called Lordum. Thus, the legendary story served much later, in the creation of the coat of arms of the city of Lourdes.
