ITS HISTORY

The Public Baths were built on the site of the 3-star Hôtel de France shortly after the apparitions in 1858. The town's architect then built a hotel with a few rooms, which was replaced by the current Art Deco building between the wars.

ITS NAME

The hotel bears the name DE FRANCE because in 778, Charlemagne, King of the French and Roman Emperor, took over the city, with the exception of the castle, which would never agree to submit to any mortal. The bishop, as a good servant and ambassador of the aforementioned Lady Sainte-Marie, went to see Mirat and, among other things, said the following to him: "Mirat, since you don't want to surrender to Charles the Great, the most illustrious mortal in the universe, since you don't want to recognise a master, at least recognise a mistress, surrender to the most noble lady who ever was, the Mother of God, Sainte-Marie du Puy, Our Lady of France. I am her servant, become her knight. At these words, Mirat, already enlightened from on high by a ray of grace, said to him: "I surrender my arms and everything that belongs to me to the Mother of the Lord, to Sainte-Marie du Puy. Following the custom of gentlemen, he gave his name to the fortified castle of Lourdes, which has since been called Lordum. The legendary story was later used to create the coat of arms of the town of Lourdes.
